Americans Shop Most When They Get Depressed

You think you heard everything but along comes the news that Americans shop the most when they get depressed. One of the ways they get depressed the most is because of the winter blues. So they go out and shop like they never did before. They shop like they know they would die tomorrow.

Think about the title of this post. It’s scary, ain’t it? However, Americans have also been known to shop when they are happy. There is no end to their shopping, is there?

What Is Depression?

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) defines depression as:

Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad. But these feelings are usually short-lived and pass within a couple of days. When you have depression, it interferes with daily life and causes pain for both you and those who care about you. Depression is a common but serious illness.

Many people with a depressive illness never seek treatment. But the majority, even those with the most severe depression, can get better with treatment.

Medications, psychotherapies, and other methods can effectively treat people with depression.

Read again the last sentence Medications, psychotherapies, and other methods can effectively treat people with depression.

Most folks think when the government says other methods, it actually means shopping because that’s the only thing they can do best when they are depressed.

Americans shop to boost up their mood…

Give me a break! Americans would not stop shopping no matter what. An overwhelming majority shop for no reason at all.

Their closets are full of clothes and shoes – with the newest fashion I might add.

I Gotta Go Shopping

I gotta go shopping more often

They are always ready to go out and shop and they shop like there is no tomorrow.

Americans don’t give a shit about tomorrow. They live for today. They make their kids apply for loan because their own saving is next to zero.

Come to think of it they seem to act selfish in their behavior, always thinking about themselves.

As long as they are happy, who gives a damn about kids. Anyway, don’t make depression as your excuse to needless shopping.

According to CouponCabin.com

Forty-Five Percent of U.S. Adults Report They Shop in Pursuit of Retail Therapy; Highest Among Women Ages 18-34.

It’s important to Americans to shop whether they are aware of the damage that needless retail therapy spending can do to their budget.

What you can do…

First off, you must understand that shopping is not a way out of depression. On the contrary, it is detrimental to your financial life and your sanity.

If you have feelings of low self-esteem, powerlessness and lack of control over your life, then do something about it rather than taking it out on shopping.

Obesity has been on the rise. Instead of retail therapy, they should seek out other seasonal mood boosters like exercise, exposure to sunlight during the day and vitamins.

You should seek out and learn about self-control not only in your personal finance but all walks of life. So if you are one of the millions who make retail therapy as their way out of depression, have determination starting today to seek help. You can do it yourself if you are determined.

Shopping may feel like a solution to you, as it temporarily ends the misery but in reality it increases this so-called retail therapy. Simply put, stop shopping therapy to your depression miseries.

In a Nutshell
Humans in general and Americans in particular come in different shapes and sizes – physical as well as mental. Develop self-control in your life and you can do it yourself. You don’t have to go to a shopping psychiatrist if that’s what it’s called.
