How To Customize Archives Page With A Twist Of Ads

Sunday, January 3, 2010, 11:13 AM | 2 Comments

Traditionally, most bloggers have a link to Archives and Site Map on their blogs. The main purpose of the Site Map is to generate XML file that you can upload to your domain under public_html. Plug-Ins are used to generate Site Map.

Along with the XML file, the utility will generate a site map which is basically archives of all your posts, mostly displayed By Category and By Month. By Category is fine but By Month for most blogs, in my opinion, does not make much sense. I could not care less when the post was written.

So I decided to do Archives differently for the convenience of visitors as well as create internal links for the search engines. I searched for a plug-in and I found one. I am using the Plugin developed By Fernando Briano known as List Category Posts (LCP) to customize my Archives page.

The description for the plugin is as follows:

List Category Posts allows you to list posts from a category into a post/page using the [catlist] shortcode. This shortcode accepts a category name or id, the order in which you want the posts to display, and the number of posts to display. You can use [catlist] as many times as needed with different arguments. Usage: [catlist argument1=value1 argument2=value2].

Make list of Categories

First off I make a list of the categories that I want to display. The example below is given only for one category Career. The rest are done in a similar fashion. Besides the category “Career”, I have three more categories concerning Career namely Career-Students, Career-Jobs and Career-Improve. So instead of displaying one huge Career category, I display a shorter list of posts that is more modular.

First I make a list of all categories on my blog. Each one is an “anchor” to the list of posts in that particular category. The example given below is for the category of Career only.

Career

<ul>
<li><a href=”#Career-Students”>Make smart career decisions as a student</a></li>
<li><a href=”#Career-Jobs”>Tips for how to get a job</a></li>
<li><a href=”#Career-Advance”>Tips for how to advance in your career</a></li>
<li><a href=”#Career”>More articles on Career…</a></li>
</ul>

<a name=”Career-Students”>Career: Make smart decisions as a student</a>

[catlist name=career-students orderby=date order=DESC numberposts=-1 catlink=yes]

Link to Your Ads

<a name=”Career-Jobs”>Career: Tips for how to get a job</a>
[catlist name=career-jobs orderby=date order=DESC numberposts=-1 catlink=yes]

Link to Your Ads

<a name=”Career-Advance”>Career: Tips for how to advance in your career</a>
[catlist name=career-advance orderby=date order=DESC numberposts=-1 catlink=yes]

Link to Your Ads

<a name=”Career”>Career: More articles on Career…</a>
[catlist name=career orderby=date order=DESC numberposts=-1 catlink=yes]

Link to Your Ads

You can look at the resulting Archives page.

In a Nutshell
When the visitors click on “Career” on the menu, they are led to a page where I have links to the three other Career categories.
