Update Your Resume Frequently For Best Results

Many experts would tell you to tweak and update your resume for the new year. I say update it more frequently especially when you finish a project successfully. It does not have to be yearly project. It can be a short, perhaps a 3-month project. Update your resume at the end of the project while the information about what you have done is still fresh in your mind. It’s like going to the dentist. If you have flossed once a day and brushed twice a day, going to the dentist would be like a simple task of breathing air.

There are lots of advantages of updating your resume incrementally and based on projects:

  • If it happens to be your new year resolution to move to another position within or outside the company, it will be a lot easier to update your resume. Hopefully, you won’t have to spend too much time tweaking it.

  • Concisely but clearly state your recent accomplishments. If you have updated your resume incrementally like I suggested above, finishing resume from top to bottom would be a breeze.

  • You may have gaps – periods when you did not work. In that case, remember to explain it clearly and with good reasons.

  • Keep your resume short – no more than two pages – and whatever you put on it must be relevant to what projects you have worked on. On the surface, it seems to be obvious but many folks don’t follow this simple advice.

  • Don’t be too artistic. A simple resume with good solid explanation of your accomplishments is all your potential employer want.

  • Most employers are interested in your recent – 10 years – accomplishments and the resume should be in chronological order. Mention last project first and then your second last and so on.

  • Mention your education last unless it’s your very first job that you are applying to.

  • You may use bullet form to mention your accomplishments for easy read.

  • In a Nutshell
You will find many websites that cater to writing resumes. Go over a few of them and select a format that suits your qualifications and experience the best. However, make sure that your new job application stands out from the crowd.
