You can work hard your entire career but not achieve the results you want. But by focusing your efforts in the right places, you can achieve outstanding results. Here are four valuable tips on how to do it.

Use These Four Tips to Boost Your PM Career

  1. Always deliver the goods

The easiest way to become successful is to “ride the wave” of your success. This means focusing hard on delivering your projects on time and under budget.

You might have to apply some heavy-weight-boxer tactics to get there, but only by delivering projects on time will you be able to drive your career in the right direction.

  2. Don’t get too scattered

You could manage 10+ projects at one time, and never get the career boost you want.

The trick is in keeping your schedule under control and not getting too scattered with too much dispersed work.

Start by managing bigger projects than you’ve managed before. Then take on projects that are critical to the success of the organization. It’s these projects that get the attention of your Executive Team.

I know you can’t always pick and choose the projects you manage. But as much as possible look for projects that are core to your business, have full buy-in and are for your most important customers.

Yes, these projects are more risky to your career but they also pay the highest dividends if you complete them successfully.

  3. Don’t keep success a secret

Successful project managers often keep their success a secret. When you are successful, take advantage with some well placed marketing.

You don’t need to throw a party for yourself. But make sure your sponsor, your manager and the senior stakeholders know about the success.

Of course, pass the complements around and be sure that the success is also shared by the rest of the team. But find ways to make sure you receive well-deserved recognition as well.

  4. Put in the hard yards

It’s one thing to “play the game” to boost your career, but it’s another to genuinely work hard.

Put in the hard yards by working harder and being more focused. Really give it your best shot.

If you choose the right projects, shout out about your successes and put in the hard yards, you can achieve your career goals.

Remember these four tips so you can boost your project career and achieve the results you want.
