What’s It With SmartPhones – Exploding Market

Thursday, November 11, 2010, 5:21 AM | 9 Comments

Since the introduction of iPhone by Apple Inc. in 2007, the usage of smart phones have increased exponentially. Market for them is exploding. Before that year, cell phones were just that, cell phones.

Making calls and sending occasional texts were the order of the day. I always said “those were the good old days.” But in the case of technology, any kind of technology, the present days are better and hopefully future would give us more convenience, broader wavelength and more features.

More features will continually evolve in yet more features and hopefully will get a lot cheaper as time goes by. The following percentages show how many Americans said they had accessed the Internet with their cell phones, according to Pew Research:

  • In 2007, 11% of Americans
  • In 2009, 25% of Americans
  • By May of 2010, 38% of Americans

Besides Internet access, sending and receiving texts via cell phone have increased astronomically. The same Pew Research shows that 95% of Americans between 18 and 29, almost 60% of those between 50 and 64 send and receive text messages. And listen to this, 19% of those 65 and over have done so.

iPhone 4 is arguably the smartest phone that is available in the market now. It features video calling with FaceTime (come face to face is even more fun), a high-resolution display, HD video recording, a 5-megapixel camera, and more.

I am just pointing out some features of these hand-held devices how convenient it has become to use their features. Of course, you have to pay dearly for extra features.

What’s a SmartPhone

Wikipedia defines it as “A mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary basic feature cell phone.”

The year 2010 so far has seen quite a few changes in smart phone. Video calling will soon be offered across the board if some are still not offering it. Gartner Research in January made predictions for 2010 in the smart phone arena and envisioned a world where more of us would live and breathe online and more often through our smart phones than our PCs.

By the looks of the industry towards the end of 2010, their prediction seems to be correct.

One survey recently said sale of all cell phones, including smart phones, has surpassed that of desktops and laptops.

It’s believable when you go out on the highway. It looks like people are out driving just so they can talk and send text on their cell phones.

According to one estimate, more than 4 billion of the 6 billion people on earth now have a cell phone, with a quarter (1 billion) of those owners getting one in just the last two years.

In a Nutshell
Technology is progressing so fast in all areas, especially cell phones, that folks don’t have to go to school to learn its features.

When I have some problems with my cell phone, I asked my kids to fix them. If I have to use a smart phone, I would use it for business so that I can get some financial benefits from it.

I am not going to buy smart phone so I can have some fun with it. I have the stupid new shows on TV for fun.

I thank TV Land and the newer MeTV channels for showing some of the best shows of 60s and 70s. That’s all the fun I get from video technology to watch old shows.

Now I can say those were the good old days. How can you beat Barney Miller, Hawkeye, Archie Bunker, Sanford, Matt Dillon and the Virginians?
