When to Save VS When to Splurge on Household Items

When furnishing a new place, it can be hard sometimes to determine what items you should allocate most of your money towards.
Should you invest in a good mattress or purchase that expensive pot set you’ve been eyeing?
These kinds of decisions can be hard to make when you need a lot of things and can be even harder if you’re on a tight budget.
Here is a list of items that will help you determine whether you should save or splurge.
Save
-
Television
A television is not necessarily a necessity. It’s a nice form of entertainment, but you do not need it to function properly on a daily basis. Since a TV isn’t a really important item to have, you shouldn’t spend too much on it right now. Depending on the make, model, and how you care for your television, it can last a long time, so do your research and figure out what TV best suits your needs. Look for brands that have low prices, but high customer reviews. This will help you when trying to find a television that’s inexpensive, yet works well.
-
Sheets
Believe it or not, there are sheet sets out there for more than $2000 dollars. While those $2000 dollar sheets are probably lovely to sleep on, $50 dollar sheets (or even cheaper) can feel just as great. As long as you purchase quality bed sheets that are made out of a fabric you like, you most likely won’t even be able to tell the difference. Save yourself some money and check out department stores, because they tend to have a wide variety of bed sheets to choose from for any budget. However, blankets can hinder how people sleep, so if they are uncomfortable and prevent you from getting a good night’s rest, return them.
-
Washer and Dryer
You would think that you need the most expensive washer and dryer out there if you wash your clothes often, but that isn’t always the case. Yes, a more expensive washer and dryer will decrease the chances of it breaking down. However, with the right care, most machines can live a long time despite being relatively inexpensive. The most important thing to keep your washing equipment running is not the brand, but how you maintain them. Refraining from overloading your machines and keeping them free of lint are some of the best things to do if you want to keep your washer and drying running properly.
Splurge
-
Mattress
We spend a lot of our lives in bed, so our mattresses need to be high grade. This doesn’t mean you need to spend $1000 dollars on a mattress, but you should allocate a good amount of money towards a good one. Look at discount furniture stores, instead of common department stores, as they usually have great sales. There you’ll be able to find quality items for an affordable price. Spending a good portion of your budget on a great mattress is worth it because getting a good night’s rest is essential to your mental and physical well-being.
-
Sofa
Your sofa is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your entire living room. This is where you’ll relax after a hard day at work, and where your guests will sit when they come to visit. With that being said, you may want to splurge on a cushioned sofa that will provide comfort to everyone who sits on it. Not only do you want to make sure your couch is cozy, but you want to make sure that it’s made out of quality materials. The better the materials, the longer it will last as the average couch can last up to 15 years with the right care.
-
Pots
While you don’t need to go out and buy cookware fit for a chef, you do need to make sure you have good pots and pans. These are what you use to cook your meals, so they need to be high grade. If your pots are falling apart or burning your food, your eating habits are going to be severely impacted. It may result in you buying fast food more often or resorting to microwave dinners, which is nice at times but shouldn’t become a habit.
Not everyone is going to want to allocate their money the same way. Some people may prioritize having an expensive washer and dryer over expensive pots, and that’s okay. As long as you are not spending your entire budget on one item you’ll be on your way to a stylish, yet affordable home in no time.
